Then & Now
๐ฐ๏ธ This still shapes laws, borders, and even your school today.
Colonial America was characterized by the establishment of thirteen distinct colonies along the Atlantic coast, each with unique economic, social, and political structures. The colonies were founded primarily by European settlers seeking religious freedom, economic opportunity, or political autonomy, with the New England, Middle, and Southern colonies developing distinctive identities. The New England colonies, for example, were largely Puritan and focused on community and religious adherence, while the Southern colonies relied heavily on agriculture and the labor of enslaved Africans. Tensions between colonial interests and British imperial policies eventually laid the groundwork for revolutionary sentiments.
Key Facts
The thirteen colonies were divided into three regions: New England, Middle, and Southern colonies.
Many settlers in New England sought religious freedom from the Church of England.
The Southern colonies heavily relied on plantation agriculture and slave labor.
