African Americans played a vital and multifaceted role in the American Revolution, participating both as soldiers and as supporters of the war effort. Many African Americans fought for the Continental Army, believing that their service could lead to greater freedom and rights. Some states even offered emancipation to enslaved individuals who served. Notable figures such as Crispus Attucks, who is often regarded as the first martyr of the revolution, exemplify the contributions of African Americans.
