Chemical compounds are substances formed when two or more different elements chemically bond together. These bonds can occur in various ways, such as ionic bonds, where one atom transfers electrons to another, or covalent bonds, where atoms share electrons. A common example of a chemical compound is water (H2O), which consists of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. In water, the hydrogen and oxygen atoms are held together by covalent bonds, creating a unique substance essential for life. Chemical compounds can have very different properties from the elements that make them. For instance, while hydrogen is a flammable gas and oxygen supports combustion, water is a liquid that puts out fires. Understanding how chemical compounds are formed helps us comprehend many chemical reactions and the materials around us.
