The Debate Team

I joined the debate team. I had to argue for and against different topics. It was a challenge. I had to research. I had to speak in front of people. I was determined to get better. I practiced every day. I read about current events. I learned to see both sides of an issue. My coach said that was important. We had a responsibility to be fair. We had to use evidence. We could not just say what we felt. We had to back it up. The first debate was scary. I forgot my lines. But I kept going. By the end of the year I had improved. I had learned to appreciate the power of words. The debate team had a positive influence on my confidence. I had discovered that I could speak in public. It had become a tradition for me to prepare carefully. My community was the team. We supported each other. The debate team had changed me. I was grateful for the challenge. I would never forget what I had learned.
