We had planted a garden in the spring. We had tomatoes and beans and carrots. We had watered and weeded all summer. Gradually the plants had grown. Now it was time to harvest. We went to the garden. We picked the red tomatoes. We picked the long green beans. We pulled up the orange carrots. We had so much food. We had discovered that growing your own food takes work. But the result is magnificent. We had never had an experience like that. We had considered that the garden might not grow. But it had. The opportunity to grow our own food had been a success. We gave some vegetables to our neighbors. We made a salad with the rest. We had learned that patience and care can grow something good. I was exhausted from picking. But I was proud. The garden harvest had been worth every day of work. I would never forget it. Perhaps we would plant again next year. We would grow even more.
