Our soccer coach chose a team captain for the season. He chose me. I was surprised. I had never been a captain before. I had to lead the warm-up. I had to help the coach. I had to encourage the team. At first I was nervous. I did not know if I could do it. Gradually I got used to it. I discovered that being a leader meant caring about others. It meant working hard. It meant being fair. We had a good season. We won some games. We lost some. But we always tried. At the last game the coach said I had done a magnificent job. I had considered saying no when he asked me to be captain. I was glad I had said yes. The experience had taught me a lot. The opportunity to lead had been a gift. I had learned that leadership is not about being the best. It is about helping everyone be their best. I was exhausted sometimes. But it was worth it. I would never forget that season. Being captain had changed me. I was grateful for the opportunity.
