Day 62 of 180Week 13 of 36, TuesdaySecond quarter

Line them up

๐Ÿ”ข Math๐Ÿ” Practiseโฑ๏ธ about 10 minutes

Two piles of buttons, spread apart and bunched up. Ask which has more, then line them up to prove it.

Reps on something already met. Short, and worth doing even on a bad evening.

Today is rung 2 of 5 on this topic

More, less, bigger, smaller

Can do: Compares two groups or objects and uses the right word for the difference.

Why it matters

Comparison words are how a child first talks about quantity. Without them, the greater-than symbol in Grade 1 has nothing to attach to.

What it looks like when it's wobbly

"More" means whatever they want; the bigger-looking pile wins even when it has fewer things.

โฑ๏ธ Two-minute check

Two piles: three grapes and six grapes. "Which has more?"

Solid looks like: The six. Then: "How do you know?" โ€” any attempt to explain is a pass.

Snack Compare

Snacks, blocks, or coins
  1. 1Make two obviously different piles. "Which one would you rather have? Why?"
  2. 2Line the piles up side by side, one to one. Now the extra ones are visible without counting.
  3. 3Use the words a lot: more, fewer, the same, bigger, smaller, longer.
  4. 4Make them equal together: "How do we make these fair?"
  5. 5Try a trick: spread three coins out wide next to six bunched up, and ask again.

If it's too hard

Make the difference huge โ€” two versus ten.

If it's too easy

Use "one more" and "one less": "Give me one more than three."

Say this

"Let's line them up and see. This one has extras โ€” so it has more."
