Day 13 of 180Week 3 of 36, WednesdayFirst quarter

Broken crayon grip

โœ๏ธ Writing๐Ÿ” Practiseโฑ๏ธ about 10 minutes

Snap a crayon in half. A short crayon cannot be fist-gripped, so the grip fixes itself while they scribble.

Reps on something already met. Short, and worth doing even on a bad evening.

Today is rung 2 of 13 on this topic

Holding a crayon and making marks on purpose

Can do: Grips a chunky crayon with fingers rather than a fist, and draws lines and circles they meant to draw.

Why it matters

Letter formation in Kindergarten fails when the hand is not ready. Strength and control come first; letters are just controlled marks with names.

What it looks like when it's wobbly

Whole-fist grip, marks made from the shoulder rather than the fingers, or the crayon abandoned after ten seconds because their hand aches.

โฑ๏ธ Two-minute check

Draw a big circle and a straight line. "Can you make one like mine?"

Solid looks like: A closed-ish circle and a roughly straight line, with the crayon held in fingers.

Big Arm Drawing

Chunky crayons or chalkBig paper, a pavement, or a steamy window
  1. 1Go big and vertical first โ€” tape paper to a wall or use the fridge. Vertical builds the shoulder and wrist.
  2. 2Draw shapes in the air together: circles, up-down lines, a rainbow arc.
  3. 3Now the same shapes on paper, huge. Don't correct the shape.
  4. 4Break the crayon in half. A short crayon physically cannot be fist-gripped โ€” it fixes the grip without a single instruction.
  5. 5Finish with something squeezy: play dough, a sponge in the bath, tongs picking up cereal.

If it's too hard

Trace with a finger in a tray of flour or shaving foam. No grip needed, all the movement.

If it's too easy

Draw a face: circle, two dots, a line. First drawing-with-intent is a huge milestone.

Say this

"Use your pinchy fingers, like a crab claw. Big arm, big circle!"
