John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry took place in 1859 when the abolitionist John Brown attempted to seize a federal armory in Harpers Ferry, Virginia. Brown's goal was to arm enslaved people and lead a rebellion against slavery. Although the raid ultimately failed and Brown was captured, it heightened tensions between the North and South. Many in the North viewed Brown as a martyr for the anti-slavery cause, while Southerners saw him as a terrorist. This event contributed to the growing divide that eventually led to the Civil War.
