In the years leading up to the Civil War, many Southern states felt that their rights were being threatened by the federal government, particularly regarding the issue of slavery. This act of secession was rooted in the belief that states should have the power to determine their own laws. Soon after, other Southern states followed suit, creating a divide that would lead to the Civil War.
