World War I, also known as The Great War, lasted from 1914 to 1918 and was one of the deadliest conflicts in history. Triggered by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, the war involved major powers divided into two main alliances: the Allies and the Central Powers. New military technologies, including machine guns, tanks, and chemical warfare, contributed to unprecedented levels of destruction and loss of life. The war ended with the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, which imposed heavy reparations on Germany and redrew national boundaries, sowing the seeds for future conflicts, including World War II.
