The Articles of Confederation served as the first constitution for the United States, ratified in 1781. This document established a confederation of sovereign states, granting limited powers to a central government. However, the Articles revealed significant weaknesses, such as the inability to levy taxes or regulate commerce, leading to various economic and political challenges. These shortcomings prompted calls for a stronger federal government, ultimately resulting in the Constitutional Convention of 1787, where the current U.S. Constitution was drafted.
