The Haitian Revolution, which took place from 1791 to 1804, was a pivotal uprising against colonial rule in Saint-Domingue, now known as Haiti. It was led primarily by enslaved Africans who sought freedom from the brutal system of plantation slavery imposed by French colonists. The revolution was marked by powerful leaders such as Toussaint L'Ouverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines, who fought for both abolition and independence. Ultimately, Haiti became the first independent black republic and the first nation in the Western Hemisphere to abolish slavery, inspiring other movements for independence and social justice worldwide.
