The Boston Tea Party, occurring on December 16, 1773, was a pivotal act of defiance against British taxation policies. As a response to the Tea Act, which granted the British East India Company a monopoly on tea sales in the colonies, American colonists, frustrated by taxation without representation, disguised themselves as Mohawk Indians and boarded three ships in Boston Harbor. They proceeded to dump 342 chests of tea into the water, symbolizing their resistance to British rule. This act not only escalated tensions between Britain and the colonies but also united many colonists in the fight for independence.
