Then & Now

๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ This still shapes laws, borders, and even your school today.

The Articles of Confederation served as the first constitution of the United States, ratified in 1781, and established a loose confederation of sovereign states. This document was born out of the necessity to unify the states during and after the American Revolution. However, the Articles revealed significant weaknesses, such as the lack of a strong central government, the inability to levy taxes, and challenges in regulating commerce. These limitations led to issues such as economic instability and interstate disputes, ultimately prompting the Constitutional Convention of 1787, where a new constitution was drafted to create a more effective federal government.
