Lesson 71 of 84 ยท Matter and Atoms
Lessonโญ 30 XP๐งช Potion KitchenStates of Matter: What Is a Solid? (Part 3)
Matter and Atoms.
๐ฏ Your mission
Master the concept. Use it tomorrow.
โก The twist
Color changes mean atoms are rearranging โ even if you can't see them.
Mind = Blown
๐งช If you could remove all the empty space from atoms, the entire human race would fit in a sugar cube.
Make a hypothesis first
Before you mix: what color do you think it'll turn?
What You'll Learn
Matter exists in three common states: solid, liquid, and gas. Solids have a fixed shape and volume, liquids have a fixed volume but take the shape of their container, and gases fill any container.
Key Words
- atom
- proton
Steps
Read about Matter and Atoms and write down three key facts.
Test how temperature affects dissolving: dissolve sugar in cold, warm, and hot water. Count stirs needed for each and create a data table.
Observe what happens and describe it in detail.
Record your observations in your science journal with measurements and descriptions.
Check Your Understanding
Question 1
1 of 3What are the three common states of matter?
Where you see this in real life
Your toothpaste, your soap, even your breakfast involves this.
Stretch Challenge
Try this in real life this week.
Ask a grown-up to help you mix two safe kitchen things. Predict what will happen first.
For the dinner table
โWhat's something we cook that mixes things together this way?โ
