Lesson 44 of 84 ยท Weather and Climate
Experimentโญ 30 XP๐ Rock RealmLayers of the Earth (Part 2)
Weather and Climate.
๐ฏ Your mission
Run the experiment. Find out what really happens.
โก The twist
Weather isn't random โ it's just complicated.
Mind = Blown
๐ The deepest part of the ocean is deeper than Mount Everest is tall.
Make a hypothesis first
Before you observe: what shape will it leave?
What You'll Learn
Earth has three main layers: the thin outer crust, the thick mantle, and the dense core. The core has a liquid outer layer and a solid inner layer made mostly of iron.
Key Words
- weathering
- erosion
Materials Needed
- cotton balls
- food coloring
- clear container
- rocks
- sand
Safety First
- Use materials only as directed in the experiment.
- Keep small objects away from young children.
Steps
Review the background information on Weather and Climate before starting.
Model erosion: tilt a tray of soil and pour water from a cup at the top. Observe how channels form. Try adding plants or rocks to slow the erosion.
Watch carefully for any changes and note the time.
Create a data table to organize your measurements.
