The Pythagorean Theorem is a rule that helps us understand the relationship between the sides of a right triangle. A right triangle has one angle that measures 90 degrees. According to the theorem, if you label the two shorter sides as 'a' and 'b', and the longest side, called the hypotenuse, as 'c', the formula is aยฒ + bยฒ = cยฒ. This means that if you square the lengths of both shorter sides and add them together, you will get the square of the length of the hypotenuse. For example, if one side is 3 units long and the other side is 4 units long, you can calculate the hypotenuse like this: 3ยฒ + 4ยฒ = 9 + 16 = 25. Therefore, cยฒ = 25 and when you take the square root, c equals 5. So, the hypotenuse is 5 units long.
