Rational and irrational numbers are two main types of numbers in math. Rational numbers can be expressed as a fraction, where both the numerator and denominator are whole numbers, like 1/2 or 3. On the other hand, irrational numbers cannot be written as fractions; their decimal forms go on forever without repeating. A classic example of an irrational number is the square root of 2, approximately 1.41421356. This number cannot be exactly expressed as a fraction, making it irrational. Both types of numbers are essential in mathematics. For instance, when measuring something with precision, you might encounter both rational and irrational numbers. Understanding the difference between them helps us use the right type of number in various math problems and real-life situations.
