Plate boundaries are the edges where two tectonic plates meet. These boundaries are crucial because they are where most of the Earth's geological activity happens, such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. There are three main types of plate boundaries: convergent, divergent, and transform. At convergent boundaries, plates push against each other, and one may slide beneath the other, forming mountains or causing earthquakes. Divergent boundaries occur when plates move apart, allowing magma to rise and create new crust, like at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Finally, transform boundaries happen when plates slide past each other horizontally, leading to friction and earthquakes, such as the San Andreas Fault in California. Understanding plate boundaries helps scientists predict geological events and understand the Earth's structure.
