Feudalism was a system that organized society in medieval Europe, around the 9th to 15th centuries. It was based on land ownership and relationships between different social classes. At the top of the feudal system was the king, who owned all the land. The king would give land, called a fief, to nobles or lords in exchange for their loyalty and military support. These lords then provided land to knights, who promised to protect the lord's land in return. Below them were peasants or serfs, who worked the land and produced food. For example, a lord might own a large estate where peasants farmed, and in return for their work, the peasants received some protection and a place to live. This system created a structured society where everyone had a specific role, but it also meant that many people had little freedom or rights.
