Waves are disturbances that transfer energy from one place to another, often through a medium like air, water, or even solid materials. There are two main types of waves: mechanical waves and electromagnetic waves. Mechanical waves, such as sound waves or ocean waves, require a medium to travel through. For example, when you throw a stone into a pond, it creates ripples that move outward; these ripples are mechanical waves. On the other hand, electromagnetic waves, like light from the sun, can travel through the vacuum of space without needing a medium. Waves have properties such as wavelength, frequency, and amplitude. Wavelength is the distance between two wave peaks, while frequency is how many peaks pass a point in one second. Amplitude measures how tall the waves are, which relates to the amount of energy they carry. Understanding waves helps us in various fields, from music to technology.
