The respiratory system is responsible for taking in oxygen and removing carbon dioxide from the body. It starts with the nose or mouth, where air enters and travels down the trachea, or windpipe. The trachea splits into two bronchi, which lead to each lung. Inside the lungs, smaller branches called bronchioles connect to tiny air sacs called alveoli. This is where the magic happens: oxygen from the air passes into the blood, and carbon dioxide moves from the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled. For example, when you breathe in during exercise, your body needs more oxygen to fuel your muscles, so your breathing rate increases. The diaphragm, a muscle below your lungs, helps control this process by contracting and relaxing to let air in and out. This system works continuously, ensuring your body gets the oxygen it needs to function properly.
