The digestive system is responsible for breaking down the food we eat into nutrients that our body can absorb. It starts in the mouth, where chewing and saliva begin the process. Once swallowed, food travels down the esophagus and into the stomach, where it mixes with acids and enzymes. This mixture is called chyme. Next, chyme moves into the small intestine, where most nutrient absorption happens. Tiny finger-like structures called villi line the walls of the small intestine and help absorb nutrients into the bloodstream. Finally, any undigested food passes into the large intestine, where water is absorbed, and waste is formed. For example, when you eat an apple, your digestive system breaks it down into sugars, vitamins, and fiber, providing energy and nutrients to your body.
