I had signed up for the cross-country team. The races were long. I was determined to finish my first race. The course was three miles. I had never run that far. The challenge was to keep going when my legs hurt. I had a responsibility to my team. I could not quit. I ran. I kept a steady pace. I learned to appreciate the support of the crowd. By the end I was tired but proud. The race had a positive influence on my fitness. Running had become a tradition for me. My community was my team. We had achieved our goal. I had discovered that I could do hard things. I would never forget that first race. The challenge had been worth it.
