Classification of organisms helps scientists organize and understand the diversity of life on Earth. Organisms are grouped based on shared characteristics such as their physical features, genetic makeup, and evolutionary history. The main levels of classification include domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species. For example, the domestic dog is classified as follows: it belongs to the domain Eukarya, the kingdom Animalia, the phylum Chordata, the class Mammalia, the order Carnivora, the family Canidae, the genus Canis, and the species Canis lupus familiaris. Each level narrows down the characteristics that define the organism. This system not only helps in identifying and naming organisms but also in studying their relationships with one another.
