Rational numbers are numbers that can be expressed as a fraction, where both the numerator (the top number) and the denominator (the bottom number) are integers. This means they can be whole numbers, negative numbers, or zero, as long as the denominator is not zero. For example, the number 3 can be written as 3/1, which shows it is a rational number. Similarly, -2/5 is also a rational number because both -2 and 5 are integers. Even decimals like 0.75 are rational because they can be written as 75/100, which simplifies to 3/4. Rational numbers can be positive or negative, and every integer is a rational number too, since you can write it as a fraction. Understanding rational numbers helps in many areas of math, like solving equations and comparing values.
