The Declaration of Independence was a document written in 1776 by leaders of the American colonies. It announced that the colonies were breaking away from British rule. The Declaration explained that everyone has rights, like life and liberty, and that governments should protect these rights. If a government fails to do this, people have the right to change or remove it. For example, the colonists were unhappy with British laws and taxes, so they decided to declare their independence. This important document helped shape the United States and inspired other countries to seek freedom.
