The Stray Cat

A stray cat started coming to our backyard. It was thin and scared. It would not come close. We put out food and water. We left it alone. Gradually the cat began to trust us. It came a little closer each day. After two weeks it let me pet it. I had never had a cat before. We discovered that it was friendly. We took it to the vet. The vet said it was healthy. We decided to keep it. We gave it a name. We called it Shadow. Shadow became part of our family. It slept on the couch. It played with string. I had discovered that patience can turn a stray into a friend. The experience of earning an animal's trust was magnificent. I had considered that we might never tame it. But we had been patient. The opportunity to give a cat a home had changed us all. Shadow was happy. We were happy. I was exhausted sometimes from playing with Shadow. But it was worth it. I would never forget the day Shadow first came to us. It was the beginning of something good.
