Civil rights are the basic rights and freedoms that belong to every person. They ensure that everyone is treated equally and fairly, no matter their race, gender, or beliefs. For example, during the 1960s, many people, including Martin Luther King Jr., fought for the civil rights of African Americans. They wanted to end segregation, which was a law that kept white people and black people apart in schools and public places. Thanks to their efforts, laws were changed, allowing everyone to go to the same schools and sit together on buses. Civil rights continue to be important today as we work towards a fairer society for everyone.
