In the middle of winter Maya noticed a bird at the feeder. It was small and gray. It looked cold. Maya asked her mom if they could help. Her mom said they could make a shelter. They used a cardboard box and cut a door. They put it near the feeder. They added seeds and water. The bird came every day. Soon other birds came too. Maya learned their names. There were chickadees and sparrows. She read a book about birds. She discovered that birds need food and water in winter. Perhaps their little shelter had saved some lives. Maya felt proud. She had never thought she could help wild animals. The birds became her winter project. She refilled the feeder every morning. When spring came the birds stayed around. They had discovered a safe place. Maya decided she would always feed the birds. It was a small adventure. But it mattered.
