On the first day of school Maya felt nervous. She was in a new grade. She did not know anyone in her class. She sat at her desk. She looked around. A girl named Priya was sitting next to her. Priya smiled at her. Maya smiled back. At lunch Priya asked if Maya wanted to sit with her. Maya said yes. They talked about their summer. They talked about their favorite books. Maya felt much better. Priya showed her where the library was. She showed her where the gym was. By the end of the day Maya had made a friend. A kind smile can make a big difference. Maya will never forget Priya's kindness.
