Authors write for a reason. We call that the author's purpose. Sometimes authors want to inform us. They give us facts. We learn something new. Sometimes authors want to entertain us. They tell a story. We enjoy it. Sometimes authors want to persuade us. They want us to think or do something. They give reasons. When we read we can ask why did the author write this? That helps us understand. We think about the author's purpose. It makes us better readers. We can tell if we should learn facts or enjoy a story or think about an idea.
