Place value helps us understand the value of each digit in a number. In the hundreds place, a digit shows how many groups of one hundred there are. For example, in the number 472, the '4' is in the hundreds place, meaning there are four groups of one hundred, or 400. The '7' is in the tens place, and the '2' is in the ones place. So, 472 means 400 + 70 + 2.
