He wrote around thirty-eight plays as well as sonnets and longer poems, working as an actor and shareholder in a London theatre company. Many of his plays were performed at the Globe, an open-air theatre where audiences of very different means stood or sat to watch. He wrote in verse and prose together, and a great many phrases first written down in his plays are still ordinary English today.
