Data are recorded in a table first, with one row per trial and units written in the column headings rather than repeated in every cell. Choosing the right graph matters: bar charts compare separate categories, line graphs show how something changes continuously, and scatter plots reveal whether two measurements are related. By convention the independent variable goes on the horizontal axis and the dependent variable on the vertical. A graph without labelled axes and units cannot be interpreted, however neat it looks.
