Patterns and Data

A pattern is something that repeats in a regular way. Red, blue, red, blue is a pattern. AI is really good at finding patterns.

Music has patterns in rhythm and melody. A drumbeat repeats: boom-tap-boom-tap. AI uses music patterns to suggest songs you might like.

Your day has patterns: wake up, eat breakfast, go to school. AI in apps can learn your patterns and remind you of things.

Sometimes AI needs millions of examples (big data), but sometimes just a few good examples are enough (small data). It depends on the task.

AI sees data as numbers. A picture becomes a grid of numbers for colors. A word becomes a list of numbers. AI works with numbers.

Sometimes we see patterns that are not really there. If it rains 3 Mondays in a row, that does not mean it always rains on Monday.

If AI only learns from data about one group of people, it might be unfair to others. Data should include many different people and examples.

Data comes from thermometers (temperature), scales (weight), clocks (time), and more. We create data every day!

Charts and graphs show data visually. A bar chart can show which fruit is most popular. AI can make charts from data.

Finding patterns helps solve problems. If AI notices that plants grow better with more water (to a point), that pattern helps farmers.

Your data — what you search, watch, and click — is valuable. Companies use it to show you ads. Keep your data private when possible.

AI can find patterns in pictures, like noticing that cats have pointy ears and dogs have floppy ones. It uses patterns to tell things apart.

AI sorts data into groups. It might sort animals by size, or songs by speed. Sorting helps organize information.

Nature is full of patterns — seasons repeat, flowers have symmetric petals, snowflakes have six sides. AI can study nature's patterns.
